National Poetry Day: Cumbria Events

Read more poetry on this an annual celebration of the form. This year the Poetry Society has decided that the theme should be Identity – a crucial issue and talking point in today’s culture. Events will be taking place throughout the day at different venues.
9.30am – 5pm Penrith Library: book launch and readings: Michael Molyneux follows up his successful collection The Night is My Woman, with a new collection which includes essays as well as poems: Involutions.
1pm Poetry on a Steamer, on Windermere. Featuring poems on the 'international identity' by poets from around the world. Passengers will be encouraged to participate and to read out their own favourite poems. Suitable for all ages. Bookings: Robin Martakies 015394 33522 or [email protected]
2pm - 4pm Kendal Library: local artist and educator, Caroline Eustace, will be leading a workshop entitled: 'Read the poems, do the art share the experience' in the Gallery space at the library.This is a ticketed event: tickets cost £1, available from Kendal Library, and there will be refreshments. No artistic expertise or previous experience necessary, and all materials are provided!
2pm Penrith Library: poetry reading with Julie Callan to celebrate National Poetry Day, plus exhibition of Julie’s poems and art work in the library.
7pm - 9pm Ulverston Library: What’s your favourite poem? See event details above.
7.30pm Soulby Village Hall: Write of Eden writing group in Kirkby Stephen are hosting a cabaret evening of entertainment, including buffet supper and licensed bar. Poetry and writing from the group features in the first half of the evening, and special guest Bernard Wrigley (hilarious actor, musician and monologist who has appeared in Last of the Summer Wine, Dinner Ladies, Coronation Street , Eastenders etc). 9pm Poetry and Music at The Nest, 290 Rawlinson Street , Barrow. Poet Ann Wilson will be performing at around 10pm. Visitors to the shop during the day will also be given a free poem written by Ann.
