John Jones Griffith was one of that remarkable tradition of Welsh non-conformist master mariners who sailed the seas in the nineteenth century. He was despatched to Australia to be an apprentice to his draper uncle at the age of thirteen, and only became a sailor through his desire to escape the draper's trade and see the world.
