Diversity Matters

20th June 2006

A film which was funded by the DfES, and commissioned by Arts Council England especially for the Diversity Matters conference is now available to view online. Reports carried out by Arts Council England show that diverse representation in the publishing industry is still low, whilst, statiscally, this sector is very well represented on the performance circuit.

This video looks at what the youth of today’s culturally diverse Britain really do like to read. And it's not just Playstation magazines and stories about wizards.

To compile the programme Arts Council England trailed the country talking to three groups of young people aged eight to sixteen.

It was discovered that there was a definite passion for reading a broad range of material and equally diverse interests. The recurring theme here was representation and that despite the volume of choice, overall books failed to reflect the diverse cultures and communities that exist within our schools, and British society as a whole. To see what they had to say visit www.dfes.gov.uk
from 26th June.
