In the North West Words.04: Leigh & Wigan Words Together 12-18 April http://www.wiganmbc.gov.uk/pub/council/bulletin/volume13_2003/leisure.htm/ The First Annual Literary Festival for the whole of the Wigan Borough is a collaboration between a voluntary group, the newly-formed Leigh and Wigan Words Together Literary Festival Society, and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust. There will be performances, workshops and lectures, poems, and plays as well as folk-singing and comedy, from both local artists and national figures. Festival partners include several local writers groups, Towpath Community Press, Making Waves Radio Group, the library authorities, The Turnpike Gallery, Wigan & Leigh College, and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust. Confirmed Literary Highlights for 2004: An appearance from local author and Coronation Street creator, Tony Warren; a commemorate his life and work of Leigh author and film scriptwriter, James Hilton, (Goodbye Mr Chips and Lost Horizon), who died 50 years ago this year, and a custom built ‘recording and performance bus’ to go into the heart of communities around the borough (tbc). WOW celebrates radical writing by involving new and local communities in the context of social justice, international links, schools' involvement and debates the impact of digital technologies on writing. WOW takes place a month earlier than previously this year. Confirmed Literary Highlights for 2004: The festival is to be opened with once in a lifetime appearance by arguably the world’s greatest living philosopher Noam Chomsky, appearing at the Unity theatre, Sat 22 May, other highlights (tbc) include a launch of Comma Press’ Liverpool Stories 1 and a discussion of how the myth of Liverpool has been created by key writers from the city: Willy Russell, Alan Bleasedale and Carla Lane.
