Michael Schmidt (poet, publisher, author, professor) teases out the genius of two very different nineteenth century women poets. Emily Dickinson was a poet rooted in the hymn and ballad tradition, in scripture and in Webster’s Dictionary. Charlotte Mew’s roots were neither so deep not so constraining, and yet the body of her surviving work is slight in comparison to Dickinson’s. Michael Schmidt looks at some of their poems and discusses their inventive prosodies, syntax and diction.
