Badr’s, A Balcony Over The Fakihani, is a triptych of novellas evoking three key moments in Palestinian history through three different narrators: the 1948 nakba (catastrophe), the ’70-‘71 flight from Jordan (Black September) and the destruction of Beirut in 1982. Born in Jerusalem and raised in Jericho, she has lived in Beirut, Damascus, Tunis, Amman and Ramallah.
Samir El–youssef was born and raised in the Rashidia refugee camp, Southern Lebanon, before settling in London. His pot-haze portrait of camp life, The Day The Beast Got Thirsty, eschews the political reflexes of resistance literature in favour of sour absurdist comedy. It was controversially published in portmanteau with stories by the Israeli author Etgar Keret in Gaza Blues. His forthcoming novel, The Illusion of Return will be published next year.
