Mike Priestley

Synopsis

A Wallasey resident for the first 33 years of his life, Mike Priestley taught geography in Birkenhead and the East Midlands, before finding his current post, working with young people with autism. Travelling around the area, as a walker, cyclist, railway enthusiast and amateur photographer, Mike developed a great affection for Merseyside and the Wirral peninsula, in particular. Mike's Dad often added colourful descriptions of his memories of Merseyside in the first half of the twentieth century, from the vibrant bustle of the City of Liverpool to the comparatively rural scenes that still existed in some parts over the waterA". Every so often the family would turn to the photographs, unusually, not dominated by family snaps, but by this magnificent inheritance of local views. They prompted much discussion about familiar landmarks and the pace of change. Mike recognised their importance as historical documents and was grateful that eventually they were left to him for safe keeping. Mike had discussed with his Dad his plans to share the photographs with a wider audience and this collection is the result.
