The text explores the impact of the bombing raid on the Basque town of Guernika in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War and the imagery used by Picasso in working on his huge painting. It also considers the continuing resonances that the painting has had with other subsequent conflicts and the way it has grown to become an icon which stands for the rejection of war. Ian Gray talked to the children of Orrell Holgate Primary School and, with them, looked at the painting; re-interpreting its stories, characters and imagery to provide contemporary artwork to accompany the words in the book.
