Born in Liverpool in 1937. On joining the Sea Cadets in 1950, he spent two years at a Nautical School before joining the Merchant Navy in 1953.
It was on his first ship the Willesden of London, that he started on the long and arduous road of becoming a marine artist. It was also a ship on which he kept a record of daily events, thus resulting in his first book "A Deck Boy's Diary".
After serving aboard various types of ships until 1990 he continued with his art, but on his retirement from the sea began writing about his paintings, which in the main were ships of sail.
Married in 1963, he lives with his wife and two sons in Wiltshire. His eldest son became a government official after he had served in the Army, whilst the youngest is a master mariner.
