The three Hilbre islands, Little Eye, Middle Eye and Hilbre are a unique feature of the Wirral landscape. Situated in the mouth of the Dee estuary one mile out from the Wirral mainland, they are cut off by the tide twice a day. Now owned by Wirral Metropolitan Council (WMBC), they are managed as a Local Nature Reserve with a resident Ranger and are an important part of the Dee Estuary grade 1 Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Ramsar site (a wetland of international importance), SPA (Special Protection Area), SAC (Special Area of Conservation) and RIGS (Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Site).
The aim of this book is to give a brief look at the history and to act as a guide to the visible natural history of the islands.
