Charles Drought was born in 1938 in Bootle. In 1953 he served an engineering apprenticeship and subsequently joined the Merchant Navy as a junior engineer. He was serving as Third Engineer on the Atlantic Conveyor during the Falklands war when the ship was hit by Exocets (French-built anti-ship missiles), which caused a massive fire. It sank under tow later. He was in a unique position to describe this tragic event which he has done in The Loss of the Atlantic Conveyor. He retired in 1996 after having spent 38 years at sea, and sadly passed away on 21st April 2014.

The Atlantic Conveyor was a container ship owned by Atlantic Container Line, but requisitioned by the government during the Falklands and sent off as part of the British Task Force. The crew were given the opportunity to refuse to sign on for this voyage but none took this option. The story of its disastrous sinking with considerable loss of life is here recorded by its third engineer in poignant detail.
